Ismene and I got married in 2002. Click here to see some of the wedding pictures, as well as pictures from our hike in Greece (June 2003), and our hike through Oldeskaret in Norway (July 2003).

I am originally from Norway. I grew up in Oslo.

In 1989-90, I lived in Monterrey in Nuevo León, Mexico

I did my undergraduate degree at the University of Oslo. I enrolled in Fall of 1991 and received a Cand.Mag. degree in December 1993

From January 1994 through May 1995 I did my national service (Norway does have conscription) at Project Alternative Futures, now renamed ProSus. I also did additional coursework in Statistics as a part-time student

I went to the USA to do graduate studies in Summer of 1995, and received my PhD from the University of Colorado in 1999

My first job was at the University of Glasgow. Although Glasgow has a bad reputation - it is renowned for violence and the Glasgow Kiss (a head butt). lots of rain and a fair number of somewhat rough pubs - I found it a very nice place to live.

My second job was at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), where I worked from 2001 to 2005. The only similarity that I can think of between Glasgow University and UCSD is that both have student newspapers called the Guardian. San Diego is great for rollerblading, hiking is surprisingly nice too in Southern California, but I am not enamoured by the heavy traffic

I have been at the University of Essex since 2005. Essex must be the most maligned county in England. It is renowned for Essex man (allegedly the median voter in the UK) and very crude Essex girl jokes (but see also Germaine Greer's praise for the Essex girl). However, Essex is much nicer than it is often given credit for, and hiking is surprisingly good

I donated a kidney on August 2013. I have written a short donation journal in the hope that this may be helpful to others considering live kidney donation
